It’s clear that many of us feel strongly about the ethics and morality of these technologies. However, I don’t think it’s appropriate for the project to take a stance on them - ultimately these are personal decisions where reasonable people will find themselves differing - I think this is important for the overall health of the project. I don’t intend for that to be dismissive of the clearly impassioned and considered conclusions that my fellow project members have come to. I think this is a healthy disposition for us to have on many issues - the Rust project ought to be a big tent, bringing together people from different countries, cultures, backgrounds, experiences to build an amazing programming language - and that will necessarily involve a toleration of differences on issues such as these. There’s always an invisible cost in taking these stances in the contributors who decided Rust wasn’t for them. None of that is to say that we shouldn’t be clear and definitive in talking about the negative impact of these technologies on the project and our maintainers, we should; or that we shouldn’t respect the wishes of each individual maintainer as to whether they’d like to engage with AI, we should.
